In the name of Allah, most Gracious and most Merciful,
Research and innovation has started during the inception of the University in 2007. However, based on the performances of up to 2015, the achievements can be considered less encouraging. Why are we not there? Obviously there are many factors affecting the performances of UMK in research and innovation. UMK will have to position itself to adhere to the expectations of the stakeholders including the Ministry of Higher Education. The demands for change will come from the 10 big shifts described in the Malaysian Education Blueprint (Higher Education) and the Performance Based Budgeting which have outlined the key performance indicators to be achieved. For research and innovation, the idea of research prominence, talent development, bridging the grand challenge and wealth creation will be the basis for the future transformation of research and innovation.
In order to quickly change the scenario of Research and Innovation at UMK, a drastic and strategic transformation performed was the restructuring of the governance system to focus on effective and efficient research management, strong industrial networking and collaboration and enhance consultancy and commercialization. The structure will be supported by the strong commitment from the researchers. UMK will also strengthen the research niches through the establishment of research clusters which will be transformed to the future centres of excellence in research.
The University must be prepared for strong change in making differences, particularly in securing research funding, undertaking contract research and consultancy, publishing in reputable journals and commercializing research finding. UMK must also focus on research and innovation which will provide high and impactful outcomes, providing strong impact to the University and community. The approaches in research and innovation will have to be business unusual, although the objective is to enhance capacity building with impactful research and innovation’s outputs. UMK will try to compete with older established universities, but making differences for UMK means uniqueness and relevant leveraging on entrepreneurship as our main thrust in research and innovation. Our office has also developed the 5-year transformational strategic planning in bringing UMK to the next level in Research and Innovation. The plans hope to provide the basis and guidelines for all of us in maneuvering research and innovation agenda at the respective faculties and centres toward excellent.
To the industries and collaborators, UMK has something for everyone. Our unique strategies in research and our wide range of expertise capitalizing on the strength of entrepreneurship will the strong pulling factors for research collaboration. UMK encourages joint research and innovation and the sharing of expertise and research facilities. Obviously, UMK needs to enhance its publication through quality research and strengthen intellectual property and commercialization. I would like to invite our potential partners both from the universities, public and private sector and companies, to participate in our strategic transformation plans and be part of the main agenda in making research and innovation as a vehicle for income generation and financial sustainability. I strongly believe that, nothing is impossible provided the whole university’s system must be ready to accept new approaches in making differences. Together, let’s make that differences!
